Hydration

April 26, 2008

Staying well-hydrated is the most important thing to do when you are sick.  Not having an appetite is normal, but you need to drink lots of fluids when you are sick, regardless of whether you have a simple cold or food poisoning!  More often than not, it’s the dehydration that makes kids sicker than the actual bug (most of the time it is a virus) they are infected with!  For kids under two, I recommend Pedialyte.  For older kids, either Pedialyte or Gatorade is fine.  The point is to have something with both water and electrolytes.  Remember, if you have a sore throat or an upset stomach, don’t drink acidic beverages like orange juice that will make it worse.  Obviously, go to your doctor if your child is not getting better!
